Overview

Consider the Tibetan Spaniel to be half dog, half cat. They’re smart and affectionate like a dog, while having the independence and self-grooming skills of a cat. With a love for their families and showing off in the spotlight, these pups will be your proud, playful companion.

Tibetan Spaniels are small but bold. They’re very smart, confident, and enjoy showing off. These dogs are part independent watchdog, part affectionate family member. They love being close to people and perching themselves up on top of the couch where they can see everything going on around the home. However, if a stranger approaches, they’re watchful, reserved side is likely to come out. Tibetan Spaniels enjoy playing around with other dogs, taking walks, and playing sports where they can have the spotlight. As long as you’re within sight, this proud pup will show you what their made of.

Characteristics

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

Tibetan Spaniels are people-loving pups that get along with kids and other animals, particularly dogs. They may need training and socialization to teach them right from wrong, but once they know the drill, they should be well-behaved members of the family. Tibetan Spaniels crave companionship, so they should primarily live indoors with people that are comfortable giving them plenty of love and attention.

Exercise & Activity

Tibetan Spaniels are fairly active dogs, but they don’t need tons of exercise to be happy. They enjoy a few walks each day, but with such short legs, they don’t make the best running buddies. These dogs also love playing sports and showing off. The more recognition you give them, the harder they’ll try to please you.

Temperament and Behavior

Tibetan Spaniels are confident, watchful, smart, and brave. They have two distinct sides to their personality. One part is alert and cautious of strangers, making them great watchdogs. The other part is sweet and loving toward their family. Tibetan Spaniels also have cat-like qualities, such as their affinity for sitting on the couch or table (where they can scope out the scene) and their self-grooming techniques.

Coat & Grooming

The Tibetan Spaniel has a double coat of long, silky hair that’s usually golden in color. Even though they have long hair, these dogs are easy to groom. They don’t need trimming or professional grooming; a thorough brushing at home each week will keep their fur in good shape. Tibetan Spaniels shed twice a year, and during that time, they’ll need a bit more brushing to keep their hair under control. No trimming is needed to keep this dog looking good.
