Styrian Coarse Haired Hounds are a rare and recent breed. A mix between a Hanoverian Scenthound and a Coarse-haired Istrian Hound created this serious hunting hound. Styrian Coarse-haired Hounds are known for having a very stern expression when focused. These dogs are tireless, hardy, and work in some of the toughest mountain environments in Austria. They will never give up on a scent, and rabbits and hares are two of their favorites to track. They are also skilled at sniffing out wounded game. In addition to their hunting skills, Styrian Coarse-haired Hounds have characteristics that make them good all-around family dogs too.

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

Styrian Coarse Haired Hounds are happiest as hunting companions. They appreciate space and make good use of a large backyard. When socialized, these hounds can be receptive to little ones and friendly toward dog friends, especially if they’ve been raised as a pack. Small furry pets should be kept separate from Styrian Coarse Haired Hounds. The temptation to chase can be too strong for these pups!

And if you haven’t heard anything yet, well, you will soon, because these medium-sized dogs will not stop without finding what they’re after. They will track for hours. Without food or drink. Rain or shine. Needless to say, they are a determined bunch! Styrian Coarse Haired Hounds should be socialized and trained starting as puppies. They are both stubborn and suspicious of strangers. Showcasing leadership as an owner also makes this dog more relaxed, balanced, and willing. These hounds might become closest with this leader – especially if the person is also their hunting partner – but will be friendly and good-natured toward the whole family. When sufficiently tired out, they are actually surprisingly calm inside the house.

Styrian Coarse Haired Hounds have a wiry coat that’s easy to maintain. Weekly brushing is enough to keep their fur looking good. You may need to do so more often if the dog has been out on an adventure. Always be careful over-bathing dogs with weather-resistant coats, as it can strip much-needed oils.
