Carolinas are one of the earliest breeds, with their paw prints dating back thousands of years. They are an independent bunch and many still roam freely in the U.S. Whether four-legged or two-legged, Carolina Dogs enjoy being a part of a pack. With proper socialization, they make sweet, loyal family members.

Carolinas are one of the original dog breeds. These independent pups are ancestors to those who made the trek over the Bering Strait land bridge to North America. Today, many Carolinas are still seen roaming free in swampy southeastern states. They still have some natural wild instincts and are typically cautious with strangers for this reason. However, with early socialization, these dogs will happily join the family! Loving and friendly with their pack, Carolinas bond deeply with their owners and make an affectionate playmate for children.

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

Carolinas are happiest in a home with a large backyard for leg stretching! They can live outdoors full-time but like to be with their pack. They are playful companions for children within their family, and if raised together, they will be friendly with other animals. Those they do not know are another story. Carolinas are naturally cautious with anything new: people, pets, surroundings. You’ll have to exercise patience when introducing these pooches to a new home or friends.

Exercise & Activity

Free-spirited wanderers for hundreds of years, Carolinas need to be exercised daily. But as they are uneasy with new pets and places, they might not be the best breed to bring to the dog park. Instead, consider putting them on the leash for a run in a park or long hike in the woods.

Loyal, smart, and gentle, Carolinas are happy homebodies! These energetic dogs love being a part of a family unit and bouncing around with little ones in the backyard. However, these dogs are on high alert and have a tendency to be wary of strangers and uneasy in new settings. Early socialization helps curb this shyness. Likely stemming from their wild-dog days, other common Carolina habits include howling and hole digging.

Not much is required in the grooming department for these dogs. Carolinas have perked-up ears and a short wheaten-colored coat. Just be sure to stay on top of the usual maintenance; brush their coats and teeth regularly and bathe and clip toenails as needed. And, most importantly: Give hugs daily.
