Australian Shepherds are smart and lovable dogs, but they also demand your time and attention. The most noticeable element of their appearance are their merle (or marble-patterned) coats, but once you get to know an Aussie, you’ll be surprised by their liveliness and loyalty. These dogs have endless energy and need plenty of mental and physical stimulation to keep them occupied. Without enough activity, training, and socialization, you may have a sad and destructive Aussie on your hands. The Australian Shepherd has a dense undercoat and outer coat with medium to long hair that’s straight or slightly wavy. Aussies’ fur is short and soft on their head and legs, with a thick mane around the neck. These dogs can be black, red, red merle (dark patches on a light background), or blue merle, and some may have white markings or tan points too. Although their hair is long, Australian Shepherds don’t need much grooming. Give them a thorough brushing (especially during shedding season), and only bathe them after a good romp in the mud.
